Canowindra proudly describes itself as the 'Hot Air Balloon capital of Australia'. The historic village is home to airborne adventures, acclaimed vineyards, fascinating colonial history, a unique collection of prehistoric fossils, gentle winds and open countryside.

Canowindra is a 30 minute drive north of Cowra and 50 minutes southwest of Orange. From Sydney, the drive through the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains is a little over four hours. You can also fly to Orange airport and rent a car.

Canowindra has a definite old world charm. The main street, Gaskill Street, is a genuine timewarp curiosity. It stills follows the winding route of the old bullock track. The town’s charming main street has an old-world air, with verandah posts lining its unique curved street. 19th century buildings remain, housing a number of boutique homewares stores and art galleries, however Canowindra has retained the integrity and character of a classic country town.

It is accepted that 'Canowindra' is a Wiradjuri Aboriginal word meaning either 'home' or 'camping place'. 

Rich in community spirit, there are many active organisations including a strong Country Women’s Association presence, Lions Club, community garden and hospital.

Canowindra has excellent schools including a preschool/kindergarten, 2 primary schools and a high school.
