About Darrell Fernandes - Real Estate Agent
My journey in the real estate industry began when I had to find work experience in year 10. Most won’t know this, but I knew I would be a real estate sales agent when I was in primary school.
After migrating to Australia, it took a few years before my parents were able to purchase a property, a small 2 bedroom apartment. After outgrowing our apartment my parents decided it was time to sell, & it was at this point in time I encountered my first experience with a few real estate agents. Agents came over, spoke to my parents about what to do, & what they would do. After the last agent & his entourage left, my parents discussed who they felt would be the best agent for them. They ended up choosing the last agent & his colleagues. I think hearing mostly the same thing with very little difference between any of the them, the easy choice was to go with the last agents. All I noticed with the last agent who came with his colleagues was they were well dressed in their fitted suits, wore flash jewellery & watches & came in a shiny black BMW. Week on week these 3 agents would turn up on a Saturday, we left the apartment for their inspections, only to come back to hear them tell my parents everything that was wrong with the property including the pricing which was continually being dropped (although the price we started at was based on what the agents suggested, not what my parents wanted). From price reductions, to location, to almost anything imaginable, I heard these agents tell my parents what was wrong with the place & what buyers were saying, to even suggesting spend more money for marketing & they’d try other avenues to hopefully get a result. My parents eventually ended up selling, but I saw the struggle, stress & pressure they were put under. This was the reason I got into real estate, but I wanted to be different by just being open, transparent & honest with clients. When I told my parents I was going to be an agent, it didn’t go down to well. Their advice to me was “don’t put people through what we went through. Be a good, honest, helpful agent & always be a good person.
I learnt quickly that real estate isn’t about telling people what they want to hear, it’s not just about houses, it’s about people. For many homeowners the sale of perhaps their biggest asset could set up their future financially.
