This cottage was built circa 1860 by Augustus Dechamps, who later owned Lillydale Vineyard. He arrived in Australia with his father, Victor Joseph Clement (Joseph), and brother Louis in January 1854 on the ship Keran Hasselaar.
“Lillydale Vineyard,” the name under which his wine was marketed, was based at his home, Pine Grove (now Pine Street). Augustus’ land was originally 25 acres, and he later acquired an adjoining 27 acres selected by Bradshaw Campbell sometime between 1860 and 1872. He marketed his wine from Pine Grove, located near Main and Anderson Streets, with the old Warburton railway line to the east.
The area is now known as Deschamps Hill, with Deschamps Avenue forming the entrance. This was the first settlement east of Olinda Creek. The quality of the wines produced saw cafés in Melbourne and Geelong stocking Augustus’ wines.
His property still exists, with a frontage of 7 Pine Street, Lilydale.
As you can see, this beautiful cottage is an original homestead and holds significant historical value within Lilydale.
Some original features include a working cast-iron cooking range, fireplace, ceilings and cornices, slate and brick interior walls, the front door, slate porch, and a stunning leadlight window in the office.
Recent additions include a walk-in dressing room, bathroom, laundry, sunroom, and third bedroom. These additions complement the original home exceptionally well. The property also includes a carport and space for two vehicles, all secured behind a large solar-powered wrought iron gate.
Additional features include security cameras and a doorbell camera, a covered deck with an outdoor kitchen, and a well-equipped shed/workshop with a toilet, sink, and washing machine.
The property benefits from a good drainage system and two water tanks, ideal for maintaining the garden during summer.
The garden reflects the original land use, featuring a small orchard, vegetable beds, and a chook pen.
Set in a very safe and quiet location, the home enjoys stunning views over the Lilydale township and the Christmas Hills.
A five-minute drive takes you to the Yarra Valley, while the Dandenong Ranges are just twenty minutes away.
