Venus Bay

Venus Bay is a picturesque, seaside township on the east coast of Victoria and a popular holiday retreat for people from Melbourne and surrounds. Its permanent population hovers just below 1,000 however, this can swell into the thousands during holiday periods. The town is home to a modest shopping strip, which includes a well-stocked general store, a pharmacy, a couple of retail shops and delicious dine in or take away eateries. Of the five beach entrances to Venus Bay’s stunning coastline, No. 1 beach is patrolled by the Venus Bay Surf Life Saving Club during holiday seasons. 

The Venus Bay Community Centre is located within easy walking distance to the shops and offers a variety of programs and activities. It’s also known for its impressive community recycling op shop. In addition, the Community Centre implements a summer holiday program for children and organises a summer beach shuttle bus.

Tarwin Lower

The delightful town of Tarwin Lower and surrounds boasts a population of approximately 500 residents and meanders alongside the prominent Tarwin River offering a choice of fishing platforms. Tarwin Lower is passed through by holiday makers on their way to Venus Bay or as a scenic route to Walkerville. The main shopping strip is home to several businesses including an IGA supermarket, a petrol station, post office, hardware store and the iconic Tarwin Lower Hotel. There is a CFA with neighbouring tennis courts, a small primary school and a Community Health Centre. 

During long weekends and holidays throughout the year, Tarwin Lower hosts a popular indoor/outdoor market held in the Mechanic Institute Hall believed to be one of the oldest buildings in South Gippsland. At the western end of the town is the local fishing jetty, boat ramp and famous long picnic table. From there an approximate 5 kilometre walkway exists along the river from Tarwin Lower to Venus Bay. This is a popular path utilised by walkers, joggers and cyclists alike.

Walkerville

Walkerville is a quaint village located along the western coastline of Waratah Bay and a short drive from the neighbouring coastal towns of Tarwin Lower and Venus Bay. Walkerville is known for its limestone cliffs, which were actively mined until 1926, supplying material for Melbourne’s building industry. Despite having a few local services, the Walkerville area has developed into a destination for those seeking a quiet, relaxing day trip or holiday. There are impressive views to behold towards Wilsons Promontory from the safe swimming beaches, and several interesting rock formations to admire just off the coast. Along a gravelled road, ten or so kilometres south-west of Walkerville, is Cape Liptrap. Here a 10 metre high lighthouse, built in 1951, offers surrounding picnic areas and scenic views along the stunning seacoast.
