Mareeba is 45 minutes drive west of Cairns and its multicultural heritage has given the region its distinctive flavour. 300 sunny days a year provide a perfect climate, clean arid air, low humidity and cooler evenings than coastal towns. The locals are welcoming and the fertile district has a reputation as a food lovers paradise which can be discovered by visits to tropical fruit farms, coffee plantations, wineries and the Mareeba markets held twice monthly. Numerous crops are grown throughout the Mareeba shire including avocados, mangoes, lychees, longans, sugar cane, cashews, macadamias, bananas, pineapples and coffee. A large variety of small crop vegetables and tropical fruits are farmed in the surrounding areas as well as cattle breeding properties in the outlying areas, with cattle sales occuring weekly in Mareeba. A number of poultry farms are now operational with a Steggles factory and hatchery in Mareeba to process the chickens and provide employment to a large number of employees. Lotus Glen Correctional Centre is an Australian prison facility located 25km south of Mareeba which provides around 450 jobs for the area. Tourism also contibutes to the local economy with the big Mareeba Rodeo being a huge drawcard. Mareeba is ideally suited as a base for travellers to explore all the attractions our region has to offer and is also the gateway to the North for travellers to various regions of the outback and top of Australia. Other attractions we have are dawn hot air balloon flights over the Mareeba valley to catch a glimpse of some of the local wildlife, our annual Multicultural Festival to sample the regions finest foods, some of the greatest local coffee tasting and a trip to the beach or city shopping is only a short drive down the hill.
