Georgian houses in Tasmania are highly prized and sought after, not only for their beautiful symmetrical design, but also for the privilege of owning an early part of our colonial past and architectural history. Tasmania has the largest collection of intact Colonial and Georgian houses in Australia and Stace House, built in 1840, is no exception. Currently a private residence, the house is well suited as a permanent family residence, weekender, or accommodation venture.

The 224m2, three storey sandstone residence was originally built as a schoolhouse for Thomas Stace. Thomas arrived as a free immigrant in 1824 and received a 1000-acre grant outside Hobart. In 1832, he moved to the Brighton district, where he opened a boarding school and was also appointed Postmaster. In 1838, he purchased land where he built the current substantial stone house as a school, and later as a post office until 1973, when it was reverted back to a private residence. The property remains one of the oldest houses in the quaint historic township of Pontville.

The residence is entered via the charming green front door with distinctive fanlights. The entrance hall leads to a large library, dining room, formal living room, the master bedroom, and bathroom. All the rooms have wonderful original Georgian features. Below is the kitchen and a beautiful sitting room with white painted stone walls, fireplace, the original bread oven and multipaned windows overlooking the garden. On this floor is another bedroom, bathroom and entry to two huge storage rooms, as well as the convict cellar. The attic has 2 charming bedrooms with traditional dormer windows. There are fireplaces and wood heaters throughout. All the rooms are beautifully proportioned with garden or distant views - you can be forgiven for believing Stace House is straight out of a Country Life Magazine.

The 6812m2 established garden is abundant with native and deciduous trees, flower beds, fruit trees, stone walling and numerous seating areas. There is scope for the gardening enthusiast to expand on the design of the garden down to the bordering Jordan River and historic stables. The property is serviced by town water.

Stace House is located in the historic township of Pontville. Established in 1821, the town is known for its grand mansions, early Colonial cottages and churches. It is also home to the Shene Stables - now Lark Distillery. The city of Hobart and the Hobart Airport are only a short 30-minute drive away.

Stace House offers a unique and affordable opportunity to secure one of Pontville's important historic country houses, perfectly suited as a tourism venture, weekend country escape, retreat, or private family home.
