Nearly 47 years ago, Steve Hill was partway through a Computer Science degree at WAIT, now Curtin University with a head full of electronics, radio and telephony, when his father Mick invited him to join the family business. He said yes and the Wheatbelt's property landscape has never been quite the same since.
What followed is a career that most agents wouldn't dare dream about. In 1996, Steve and his brother Geoff acquired their competitor, Norrish Realty, and successfully merged it with their own business a move that cemented Hollett & Lawrance as the agency it is today. He is, without question, the longest serving agent in the district. And yet if you ask Steve about his superpower, he won't point to the deals, the decades or the accolades. He'll point to his father.
Mick Hill built this agency and mentored Steve with a philosophy so simple it sounds almost too easy until you see how far it reaches. "Cast your bread upon the water and it will come back ten-fold." Steve learned that lesson during a listing appointment where Mick stopped to fix a leaking toilet for a client, no invoice, no fanfare, just the quiet belief that generosity always finds its way back. He's been living that lesson ever since. Another Mick Hill classic when an overconfident visitor boasted about his qualifications and income, Mick simply smiled and said: "I have a degree in raking." Steve has never forgotten it.
That grounded, unpretentious philosophy shapes everything about how Steve leads this team. He'll joke that colleagues should use him as a warning of what not to do rather than an example to follow and then in the same breath, defer to a younger team member's idea with genuine enthusiasm. He knows that fresh eyes see things differently, and he's more than happy to let them lead. His motto is simple: "Soldier on. Learn from setbacks, forget the lost sale, and focus on the next opportunity."
He wants people to understand that selling property is far more complex than it looks contracts, special conditions, finance clauses, compliance requirements, inspections there is a legal and technical weight to every transaction that the outside world rarely sees. And when he walks into a home with DIY work that's clearly non-compliant or unsafe, he'll be the first to say so, even when it's not what anyone wants to hear. Someone has to mind the rules. Steve has always been that someone.
Northam is home in the most literal sense. His car rolls the 500 metres from his front door to the office, his favourite local spots are basically a food tour of the main street sausage rolls from the bakery opposite, salty chips from Happy Days, savoury muffins from Zax & Co, fish and chips from Lucy's and his perfect Sunday is a sleep-in, breakfast on the verandah with his wife Fiona, and some time in the garden with the dogs. He polishes his shoes every Friday night, ready for Monday. He leaves early every third Thursday for a haircut. Small rituals. Solid foundations.
He is, as he'd describe himself, an old red-brick Federation-era home a bit weathered, mortar joints fretting, roof a little thin on top but absolutely full of character.
