This page says how we write and check what we publish, and what you can expect from us when we get something wrong.
How we write
What do you aim for?
We aim to explain things in plain language and to be clear about what we know.
- We write in plain language, and we explain the steps.
- We send you to the official source for rules, fees and rates that differ by state and change often, instead of copying them.
- We say when something is general information and not advice.
How we check
How do you check what you publish?
A person reads a guide before it is published, and the links are checked.
- A guide is a draft until a person has read and approved it. A draft is not shown in the menu and is not listed by search engines.
- We check that the official links work, and say when we last checked them.
- A guide that gives a figure is checked against the official source.
Advertising
Is advertising kept separate?
We aim to make it clear what is advertising and what is not.
- A listing is provided by an agency. It is the agency's description of its own listing.
- If a placement is paid, we say so.
Corrections
What happens when you get something wrong?
We fix mistakes, and we want to hear about them.
- Tell us about a mistake and the page it is on.
- We check it against the source, and fix or remove what is wrong.
- Where a correction changes the meaning of a page, we say so on the page.
