FUN FACTS about “Claire Cottage”
- “Claire” was built in the early 1900s. Exact date is currently unknown. And was originally located on Gordon Street, Ipswich. Which is now part of the East Clinic. These records can be obtained from Somerset Regional Council.
- RAF aerial footage with the house in its original location has been sourced as early as 1926.
- “Claire” was moved to Minden in 1983, with the help of Dennis W Heilbronn. His signature remains on a panel under the house near the solar system.
- At one point in history a lady called Elizabeth owned “Claire” in Ipswich. Elizabeth was known during the war to take in single and young mothers who had lost their husbands during the war or conceived out of wedlock. She housed them, supported them, and helped them to get back on their feet in finding their own homes etc. Her ancestors were found through the Ipswich Historical Facebook group.
- Most character homes in Ipswich were named, however the current owners of “Claire” were unable to find any such record. The current owners purchase of the property coincidentally settled on her late sister, Amanda's birthday. So, the owner named the house “Claire” - this the name Amanda would have named a baby girl if she'd had one.
- The owners have always viewed their title as the custodians of “Claire”, believing their role was to take care of her until the next family. With the kids grown up and starting to spread their wings, that time is now.
- The property previously yielded excellent harvests of passionfruit, cumquat, pumpkins, potatoes, edible flowers, peaches, and various herbs. It wouldn't take much to get these and more growing again, with the rich soil in the “kitchen garden”.
