Up-down honeycomb blinds, double-glazing, and tilt-and-turn window mechanisms allow for a balance between privacy and ventilation, and lockable screen doors let the house breathe on even the hottest nights.

The great room is warmed by a low-emission Pyroclassic IV wood-burning stove, with an interior ceramic chamber providing radiant heat long after the fire has burned down. The kitchen, overlooking the dining area, includes a 900mm Fisher and Paykel induction stove, countertops which extend to create a breakfast bar. The walk-in pantry is designed to house the fridge, and leaves room for an appliance station or an additional sink to be installed. .

The primary bathroom includes a water-saving Japanese-style soaking tub, with a separate powder room for privacy. Both bathrooms feature spacious walk-in showers, and hot water is provided by an instantaneous Sanden Eco-Plus pump. The separate, laundry-mudroom is plumbed to accommodate an energy-efficient heat- pump dryer, and both toilets and washing machine use water from the backyard tank, which can be switched to the mains during drier weather.

An elevated steel platform keeps the house well above the level of the creek, and substantial irrigation deals with any run-off. The garden has been sketched in, with a mix of native and cottage plants surrounding the salvaged wooden decks, and banksia roses and clematis coming into their own. .Space has been left for shed, studio, and vegetable garden, and fruit trees have been established next to the adjoining historical orchard.
